CHAPTER ELEVEN

Gia felt like she was in Oz, as in The Wizard of Oz. No, the entrance to Atlas’s home wasn’t the glitzy green of the Emerald City, but it did have a high wall-like watchtower with a shut window and a sign reading, “Let us know who you are, and you might be allowed in.” Very Oz-like indeed.

Her Aunt Belle grabbed the oversized brass knocker and pounded it against the wall.

“Who’s there?” Ares Farley stuck his head out of the window, his ruby-red round face barely able to fit through the small frame.

“Down here, Ares,” Belle said, her tone back to its normal soft and sweet, no-where close to what she had used on Tinker Hell.

“Oh, hey, Belle. And Gia too! What a delightful surprise. Well, Dad might not be delighted. But you bet my brothers and I are. We’ve missed you. Give me a minute here, and I’ll buzz you in,” Ares said, his cheeks flushing an even deeper red.

Aunt Belle loved Atlas’s boys, all three of 'em—Apollo, Ares and Aeolus. And evidently that hadn’t changed. But what had happened between she and Atlas? And why did Gia have a very strong vision that whatever it was would have a huge impact on her and her Bishop legacy?

She reached for the purple silk bag of tarot cards in her purse and then touched her mother’s amber pendant, silently praying that each would give her the strength she’d need to help her Aunt Belle and Atlas get past whatever it was that stood between them.

Gia had figured out what the cards might mean, although she hadn’t shared their meaning with Belle. She was hoping to confirm her hunches today, with Atlas’s help.

There was a large buzz and soon a giant door, virtually invisible until it moved, opened and allowed them into Atlas’s world.

Belle drove the car just inside the wall, and then stopped.

Apollo and Aeolus came flying in, literally. Their Gator was airborne over the final dune separating them from Belle, Gia and Ares.

“Good Gods, Ares! What is your father thinking letting Apollo drive that thing?!” Belle exclaimed, making the sign of the five-pointed star from her head to her heart.

“I know! Isn’t he the worst driver ever? Wait till you see me do it. I’m much safer.”

“I’ll bet you are,” Belle said and rolled her eyes at Gia.

The Gator slid sideways to a stop in front of them, barely missing the front fender of Aunt Belle’s Nissan. She lowered her head, looked over the top of her glasses and twisted her lips in a “you’ve-done-it-now, Mr.,” signaling she’d definitely be taking up this unacceptable behavior with their father.

Apollo practically leapt out of the vehicle, leaned his head in Belle’s window and planted a huge kiss on her cheek. He then raced around the front of the car and planted one on Gia’s cheek too.

How could anyone not love these three goofballs? And how could anyone forget them?

“What’s the matter, Aeolous?” Belle asked, leaning her head out the window so he could hear her over the Gator’s engine.
